Before starting your lean to shed project you will need to decide...
1. Free Standing Or Lean To
You will need to decide whether your lean to shed will be free standing or attached to your house or perhaps an existing building around your premises.
2. Accurate Measurements
Your next critical step is to measure the area that you have to utilize and decide on the size of your lean to shed. Depending on the purpose of your shed and whether it is free standing or abutting another structure will allow you to finalize what size you need. If it is only required for gardening equipment for example then you will be perfectly satisfied with a smaller one.
However you may have more substantial uses in mind, for example sheltering livestock, in which case you will be looking at a bigger project.
3. Getting the Right Materials
Once you have measured out the area of your new shed (with string or chalk or paint) you will need to head to the local hardware store to pick up the necessary lumber, screws, roofing material and whatever other features you intend using (such as a window or door). If you have a set of shed plans then the store should be able to quantify pretty easily the amount of timber and hardware you will need. If not it would be helpful if you can provide a sketch with the basic measurements supplied which you can easily draw up yourself provided you have marked out the area on the ground.
4. Flooring
If you are not constructing your shed on a concrete slab you will need to give some thought to some type of foundation to make sure that your shed floor is raised up off the ground. Concrete blocks will do the trick well and ensure that the floor you do put down will be sufficiently raised to prevent rising damp(but don't forget to put down some type of damp course, such as PVC or a sheet of plastic if this might be an issue for your purposes).
5. Floor
Use 2 X 4 lengths of timber to build your floor and depending on what you will be using your shed for you may want to sheet it with plywood.
6. Frame The Walls
Frame up the walls of your shed and attach them to the wall of the building to which your lean to shed will nestle. Make sure to brace the corners and fix the frames to your floor.
7. Finish The Wall Frames
Now nail your 2 x 4 timber to the wall frames thereby closing up your shed after you have decided on a location for your door, which will also need to be framed.
8. Lean To Shed Roof
Your choices in relation to the roof will come down to a pitched roof or flat; I would strongly recommend a pitched roof as flat roofs always, and I mean always, leak. Fix your rafters to the wall frame and fix your plywood to the frames and the rafters to form your roof and cover with either felt or shingles depending on your budget and the purpose of your shed.
